How to Write a Press Release
for Your Book

Here are some guidelines to show you
how to write a press release for your book.
It is actually quite easy to write a press release, as you only need to use simple statements. The more complicated the release, the less easily understood it is, and the less likely it is to be used by an editor. However, you also want to write the press release in a format that the editor easily recognizes, and he feels comfortable using. This is where the layout of the press release also comes in.

The basic structure of a press release comprises three parts:
  1. Headline
  2. First sentence (Attention Grabber)
  3. Subsequent paragraphs
The Headline
The headline should be ten words, or less, and be a summary of the press release. It is important not to try to be too clever, or you may obscure the meaning, and lose potential readers. For a new author, "Vaughan Instant Publishing announces exciting new author" would be perfect.

The First Sentence
The first sentence then contains the main points of the story. You need to be sure that it tells the reader who has done what, where, why and when. Again, be as concise as possible.

It should entice the reader to continue to the main body of the press release. Here is a continuation from the headline: Jane Brown's first book, "How to Write a Press Release", is to be released by Vaughan Instant Publishing on 1st April.

Subsequent Paragraphs
Now, you can add all of the extra information in the subsequent paragraphs. The structure of these should be in order of importance. Editors always delete paragraphs from the end of a release, to fit into the space that they have, and assume that you have not left any vital news until the end. Make sure that you don't!

For a new book, you may want to include the following:

  • A brief summary of the book
  • A short biography of the author
  • A few words about Vaughan Instant Publishing
It is essential that you keep everything as concise as possible. This is the most effective way to write a press release, and increase its chances of being published. Use simple words, short sentences and short paragraphs.
